The 64 Gates in Human Design – All Gates Explained
The 64 gates are the numbers in the nine centers of your bodygraph. Each gate corresponds to one of the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching and has its own theme: Gate 1 stands for self-expression, Gate 34 for power, Gate 61 for inner knowing. Whether a gate is activated in your chart depends on where the planets stood at your birth and about 88 days before.
A gate on its own is a potential. Only together with its partner gate at the other end of a channel does it connect two centers, and that is what gives rise to your type, authority, and definition. That is why it pays to read the gates not in isolation but in the context of the channels and centers.
On this page you'll find all 64 gates in one table, along with explanations of how gates come about, what a hanging gate is, and how gates and lines relate. Which gates are activated for you is shown in the planet table of the free Human Design chart calculation.

Each row leads to the full article on that gate; the Channel column shows which partner gate it forms a channel with — Gates 10, 20, 34, and 57 have three each.
How a gate comes about in your chart
The basis is the so-called wheel: in Human Design, the zodiac, a circle of 360 degrees, is divided into 64 equal segments of 5°37′ each, one for each hexagram of the I Ching. Gate 61, for example, runs from 20°45′ to 26°23′ Capricorn. When a planet stands in one of these segments, it activates the corresponding gate.
The calculation is made for two moments. The planetary positions at the moment of your birth make up the Personality, shown in black in the chart and understood as conscious. The positions from about 88 days before birth — more precisely, from the moment the Sun stood 88 degrees before its birth position — make up the Design, shown in red and understood as unconscious. With 13 planetary points each, this produces 26 activations. If a gate is activated in both calculations, it appears striped. Because the Moon moves through an entire gate in about ten hours, the most accurate birth time possible matters.
Gate, channel, and center: how they fit together
Every gate sits in exactly one of the nine centers and belongs to at least one of the 36 channels. A channel connects two gates in two different centers, such as Channel 1–8 between the G Center and the Throat. If both gates are activated, the channel is defined, and with it both centers become defined.
If only one of the two gates is activated, it is called a hanging gate. The theme is part of your make-up and seeks its counterpart, often felt as an attraction to people who bring the missing gate. If, say, one person carries Gate 37 and another Gate 40, together they complete the whole Channel 37–40; Human Design calls this an electromagnetic connection. The articles stress one point here: attraction, not a deficiency. The transits, meaning the current planetary positions, can also complete a hanging gate for a while.
Most gates have exactly one channel partner. Four gates are the exception: 10, 20, 34, and 57 each have three partners, which makes them hubs in the chart.
The gates by center
The number of gates in each center varies widely: the Throat has eleven, the Head only three. This is how the 64 gates are distributed across the nine centers:
- Head (inspiration and questions): Gates 61, 63, 64
- Ajna (concepts and thinking): Gates 4, 11, 17, 24, 43, 47
- Throat (expression and action): Gates 8, 12, 16, 20, 23, 31, 33, 35, 45, 56, 62
- G Center (identity and direction): Gates 1, 2, 7, 10, 13, 15, 25, 46
- Heart/Ego (willpower and self-worth): Gates 21, 26, 40, 51
- Spleen (intuition and instinct): Gates 18, 28, 32, 44, 48, 50, 57
- Sacral (life force and response): Gates 3, 5, 9, 14, 27, 29, 34, 42, 59
- Solar Plexus (emotions in waves): Gates 6, 22, 30, 36, 37, 49, 55
- Root (pressure and drive): Gates 19, 38, 39, 41, 52, 53, 54, 58, 60
The article on each center explains what it means when that center is defined or open, and how its gates work together.
Gates and lines
Just as every hexagram of the I Ching is made up of six lines, every gate has six lines, each just under one degree wide. Which line a planet activates depends on its exact position within the gate. The line refines the meaning of the gate: the same theme with a different coloring, from Line 1, the investigator who needs a solid foundation, to Line 6, the role model with an overview.
The lines of the two Suns matter most: the line of the black Sun forms the first number of your Profile, the line of the red Sun the second. That is why the planet table shows an entry like 36.5 for each planet — meaning Gate 36, Line 5.
The so-called fear gates of the Spleen
Anyone searching for “fear gates” usually means the seven gates of the Spleen. The articles here don't describe them as fears but as facets of instinctive awareness in the now: a feel for what could be improved (Gate 18), a sense for risk (Gate 28), recognizing what can last (Gate 32), the instinctive memory for people (Gate 44), the depth of knowledge (Gate 48), values and responsibility (Gate 50), and intuitive clarity in the moment (Gate 57).
Caution and doubt do still appear, as the shadow side: the quiet doubt “Do I know enough?” in Gate 48, or the caution that, in Gate 32, can turn from a filter into a brake. With an open Spleen, you also tend to pick up worries from the people around you. A helpful question from the Spleen article is therefore: Is this caution really mine right now?
Frequently asked questions about the gates
What are the gates in Human Design?
The gates are the 64 numbers in the nine centers of the bodygraph. Each gate corresponds to a hexagram of the I Ching and to a 5°37′ segment of the zodiac. If a planet stood in that segment at your birth or about 88 days before, the gate is activated in your chart. Each gate has its own theme, such as self-expression, power, or intuition.
How many gates are there in Human Design, and why exactly 64?
There are 64 gates because Human Design adopts the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching: each hexagram becomes a gate, and the zodiac is divided accordingly into 64 equal segments. The gates are distributed unevenly across the nine centers — the Throat has eleven, the Head three. Through 36 channels, the gates are connected in pairs.
What does a hanging gate mean in Human Design?
A hanging gate is an activated gate whose partner gate at the other end of the channel is not activated in your chart. The theme is part of your make-up, but the channel is not defined. Hanging gates seek their counterpart, often felt as an attraction to people who bring the missing gate, or temporarily through the transits. What is meant is a complement, not a deficiency.
What is the difference between a gate and a channel?
A gate is a single point in a center; a channel is the connection between two gates in two different centers. Channel 20–34, for example, connects Gate 34 in the Sacral with Gate 20 in the Throat. Only when both gates are activated is the channel defined, and both centers become defined. A single gate remains a potential.
What are the fear gates in Human Design?
“Fear gates” usually refers to the seven gates of the Spleen: 18, 28, 32, 44, 48, 50, and 57. On this website, they are described as facets of instinctive awareness, such as a feel for improvement, for what lasts, or for people. Caution and doubt are considered their shadow side, for example the question “Do I know enough?” in Gate 48. With an open Spleen, it helps to ask whether a worry is really your own.
How do I find my activated gates?
Enter your date, time, and place of birth in the free Human Design chart calculation. The planet table then shows the gate and line for each of the 13 planetary points, separated into Design (red) and Personality (black) — 26 activations in total. An entry like 36.5 means Gate 36, Line 5. Every gate has its own article here.
How are gates and lines related in Human Design?
Each gate is divided into six lines, just as each hexagram of the I Ching is made up of six lines. Which line is activated depends on the exact planetary position within the gate. The line gives the gate's theme a particular coloring. For the two Suns, the lines also form your Profile: the black Sun gives the first number, the red Sun the second.
The gates are the building blocks of your bodygraph, and they only form a picture together with the channels and centers. They tell you the most when you start from your own: calculate your chart for free, read the articles on your activated gates, and check the transits to see which gates the sky is activating right now.
