Gate 42 — Growth

Truly finishing something is an art of its own — and often the moment when the real gain becomes visible. In Human Design, Gate 42 stands for exactly this power.

What it's about

Gate 42 sits in the Sacral Center and in the system is considered the gate of growth through completion: it supplies the energy to bring cycles that have begun to their end — projects, life phases, learning journeys. The I Ching hexagram “Increase” describes the gain that comes from this: only what has been completed yields its fruit. In Human Design, this gate forms the counterpart to beginning — it stands for the second half of every journey, which is often the more demanding one.

When the gate is activated

With an activated Gate 42, you probably have the stamina to finish things where others drop out halfway. You feel a deep satisfaction when a chapter is truly wrapped up — and perhaps a subtle unease about everything lying around half-done. Many people with this activation learn: it pays to check before diving in whether a venture is worth the whole journey, because once you are in, the energy carries you to the end. As a hanging gate, Gate 42 seeks its counterpart: people with Gate 53, the gate of beginnings in the Root Center, often seem strikingly attractive to you — together the two form Channel 42-53, in which starting and completing complement each other. Attraction, not a deficiency.

In everyday life

An example: on your team there are plenty of people who enthusiastically launch new ideas — and then there is you, the one who carries the project through the grinding final twenty percent: documentation, polish, handover. Without that part, everything would remain fragmentary; with it, effort becomes a result. That is how Gate 42 shows itself. It helps to consciously sort through unfinished business: some things deserve a real completion, others may be explicitly ended without being finished — that too is a form of completion. If you handle cycles this way, you experience growth not as pressure but as a natural harvest.

The six lines of Gate 42

Every gate has six lines. The number after the dot in your calculator results shows which one is active in your chart — "42.3" means Gate 42, Line 3. The line describes how the gate's theme shows up in you; our overview of the lines explains the six basic roles.

Gate 42 Line 1 — Check first, then complete

In Line 1, you want to understand a path before you commit to it. You look closely at what a venture demands, how long it will take, and what should be there at the end — because once you have started, you want to finish. An example: before you begin a part-time program alongside your job, you talk to graduates, read the curriculum, and plan your time; then you see it through reliably. This groundwork makes your completions solid. Professionally, you are in the right place where projects need to be set up thoroughly and wrapped up cleanly.

Gate 42 Line 2 — A feel for ripe chapters

With Line 2, you sense almost in passing when a chapter is ripe for closing. You bring things to an end as a matter of course and are surprised when others find that remarkable. For this you need phases in which you can work undisturbed at your own pace. An example: while the family is still debating the move, you have quietly sorted, packed, and readied the old apartment for handover in the evenings. In relationships, it helps when the other person understands your withdrawal as part of this completing. Professionally, people like to call you when something finally needs to get finished.

Gate 42 Line 3 — Finishing through trial and error

In Line 3, you learn to complete things by going through cycles that end differently than planned. You start, hit limits, adjust — and discover along the way which ventures deserve a real ending and which you may deliberately stop without finishing them. An example: you renovate your first room yourself, make mistakes with the plaster, and start one wall over; in the second room every move is right. From each round you take knowledge that carries you through the next. Professionally, you are valuable where processes are improved and experience from abandoned attempts explicitly counts.

Gate 42 Line 4 — Completing through your network

Line 4 brings things to completion through its network of relationships. You don’t have to finish everything yourself; your strength is bringing in the right people at the right time so that a venture comes full circle. You prefer to start new cycles once the transition is secured. An example: before you change jobs, you make sure a colleague you trust takes over your open tasks, and you train her carefully. The people around you value you as a bridge between beginning and end. Professionally, a mediating role suits you in which you accompany handovers and completions.

Gate 42 Line 5 — Called to finish

In Line 5, people expect you to finish ventures that have stalled. Others see you as the person who takes on the last, toughest stretch — and they also like to pass you old baggage that was never yours. An example: a half-finished manual has been sitting around on your team for months; when management asks who will complete it, everyone looks at you. Your strength is practical completions that benefit many. To keep it that way, you need a clear mandate: name what will be finished by when and what deliberately stays open. That way your reputation grows with every chapter you close.

Gate 42 Line 6 — A ripe harvest

Over the years, Line 6 learns to complete cycles calmly. Early on you often experience endings as a feat of strength; later, with distance, you recognize that every chapter has its own pace and only yields its fruit at the end. From this attitude you accompany others on their paths without pushing them. An example: an experienced trainer doesn’t rush her apprentices but patiently shows them how to carry a job through cleanly, from the first step to the handover. Professionally, you become someone who nurtures growth and models what a good ending looks like.

Gate 42 in transit

Every year, the Sun passes through Gate 42 from about April 10 to 16, while the Earth is in the opposite Gate 32. During these days the gate's theme is noticeable to everyone — especially to people whose Gate 42 is open.
