Your type is the first and most important statement in a Human Design chart. It describes how your energy works and how you engage with the world in the way that suits you best. Human Design recognizes five types: Generator, Manifesting Generator, Projector, Manifestor, and Reflector.
Your type is not something you choose or work out with a questionnaire. It follows mechanically from your chart: from whether your Sacral Center is defined and whether a motor is connected to the Throat. Each type comes with a strategy, a signature that tells you you're living true to your nature, and a not-self theme that serves as a warning signal.

The shares are rounded figures, not a ranking: no type is better than another, and all five are needed for a team, a family, or a society to work.
Your type follows from the defined centers and channels in your chart. Two questions are decisive. First: Is the Sacral Center defined, that is, permanently active? Second: Is there an unbroken connection from a motor center to the Throat? In Human Design, the motors are the Sacral, the Root, the Solar Plexus, and the Heart Center. The Throat stands for putting things into action and expression. If a motor reaches all the way to it, energy can flow directly into action and speech.
That is why your type doesn't depend on your mood, your stage of life, or how you see yourself. It is a property of your birth chart and stays the same your whole life.
Each type comes with a strategy, a basic approach that gets decisions and energy flowing. It is the most practical piece of information in the entire chart and, when you're starting out, more important than any detailed reading of gates or channels, because you can try it out in everyday life as soon as tomorrow.
The principle behind it could be called energy hygiene: anyone who knows their strategy wastes less energy on paths that are not their own. The five strategies are compared in detail in the overview of the five types.
Every type has two emotional states that work like a compass. The signature shows up when you follow your strategy: satisfaction for the Generator and the Manifesting Generator, success for the Projector, peace for the Manifestor, and surprise for the Reflector. The not-self theme makes itself felt when you live against your nature: frustration for the two Generator types, bitterness for the Projector, anger for the Manifestor, and disappointment for the Reflector. For the Manifesting Generator, the frustration is often mixed with impatience.
None of these feelings is a verdict on you. They are feedback: a reason to pause for a moment and check whether you are responding right now, were invited, have informed others, or are giving yourself enough time. Anyone who watches their everyday life through this pair for a while usually notices quickly where their energy is well spent and where it isn't.
Besides your type, your chart shows an inner authority. The two complement each other: the strategy of your type tells you how to approach decisions and encounters. Your authority tells you when a decision is ripe and how you can tell that it's right. A Generator with emotional authority, for example, responds to a request but sleeps on it for a night before saying yes, because their clarity comes in waves.
Authority, too, follows a fixed hierarchy based on the defined centers. Generators and Manifesting Generators have either emotional or sacral authority; Reflectors have lunar authority. Projectors and Manifestors are spread across several authorities. The third basic element is the Profile, which describes how you move through life.
Together, the two Generator types make up around 70 percent of all people, and the question of which one you are comes up especially often at first glance at a chart. Both share the defined Sacral, the strategy of responding, and the signature of satisfaction. In the Manifesting Generator, a motor center is also connected all the way to the Throat. As a result, Manifesting Generators move faster from impulse to action, often work on several projects at once, and do best to inform the people involved before they take off. The Generator works more linearly, stays with one thing, and deepens it to the point of mastery.
Strategy is your type's basic rule for how you approach decisions and encounters. Generators respond, Manifesting Generators respond and inform, Projectors wait for the invitation when it comes to the big areas of life, Manifestors inform before acting, and Reflectors give themselves a lunar cycle for big decisions. Strategy doesn't replace inner authority; it complements it.
The not-self theme is the feeling that shows up when someone lives against the nature of their type. For Generators and Manifesting Generators, it is frustration; for Projectors, bitterness; for Manifestors, anger; and for Reflectors, disappointment. Human Design doesn't see it as a character flaw but as feedback: a cue to check your strategy, your surroundings, or your timing.
