The 6 Lines in Human Design: Roles of the Profiles
In Human Design, each of the 64 gates has six Lines — just as each hexagram of the I Ching consists of six lines. Which Line a planet activates depends on its exact position within the gate. The gate names the theme; the Line refines it. For the Sun, the Line even determines your Profile: the Lines of your two Suns give you its two numbers, such as 1/3 or 4/6.
The 6 Lines carry fixed roles that run through the entire system: the Investigator, the Hermit, the Martyr, the Opportunist, the Heretic, and the Role Model. Each describes its own style of learning, forming relationships, and being perceived by others.
On this page you’ll find all six Lines at a glance, where they come from, how they relate to the twelve Profiles, and a short guide to reading the Lines in your own chart. The free Human Design chart calculation shows you which Lines are activated in your chart.

Where the Lines come from
The Lines come from the I Ching. Each of its 64 hexagrams consists of six lines stacked on top of each other, and in Human Design each hexagram corresponds to one of the 64 gates. They are counted from the bottom up: Line 1 is the lowest, the foundation on which all the others stand; Line 6 is the highest and looks out beyond the edge.
The zodiac is divided into 64 equal segments, so each gate spans 5.625 degrees. This segment is further divided into six Lines, each just under one degree wide. Gate 1, for example, runs from 13°15′ to 18°53′ Scorpio; if a planet stands in the fourth sixth of this stretch, it activates Gate 1 in Line 4. The article How Your Chart Is Calculated in the Basics section explains how the positions are calculated.
Line and Profile: the two Sun Lines
Your chart is calculated twice: for the moment of your birth (Personality, black, conscious) and for the moment about 88 days earlier, when the Sun stood 88 degrees short of its birth position (Design, red, unconscious). Each of the two Suns sits in a gate and, within it, in one of its six Lines. These two Sun Lines make up your Profile: a Personality Sun in Line 4 and a Design Sun in Line 6 give you Profile 4/6.
The first number describes how you experience yourself and consciously show up. The second works more in the background — others often notice it in you before you do. This produces exactly twelve Profiles, and each Line appears in four of them: twice conscious, twice unconscious. Line 1, for example, stands consciously in front in Profile 1/3 and unconsciously in the back in Profile 5/1. You’ll find more in the article Lines and Profiles.
The six Lines in brief
- Line 1 – the Investigator: For this Line, trust comes from thorough understanding, not from outside encouragement. What it has worked out for itself becomes a knowledge base that others can rely on, too.
- Line 2 – the Hermit: Its gifts are not painstakingly learned, and precisely for that reason they remain invisible to it. It needs time in retreat and is recognized and called by others.
- Line 3 – the Martyr: It learns by bumping into things, in real life rather than at a desk. Every “this doesn’t work” is a result, not a mistake — and so, over the years, a treasure of practical experience grows.
- Line 4 – the Opportunist: Its opportunities come through people it knows and trusts. It cultivates relationships for the long term and prefers to let go of the old only once the new is in sight.
- Line 5 – the Heretic: Others project onto it and see it as the answer before it has said a word. Its art: delivering practical solutions and keeping expectations realistic.
- Line 6 – the Role Model: It lives in three phases of life: like a Line 3 until about 30, then observing “from the roof,” and from about 50 on as a serene role model. It has an impact not by lecturing but through the way it lives.
Lines 1 to 3 and 4 to 6: two directions of focus
The six Lines can be read in two halves. The lower three are considered personal: they describe how you yourself find solid ground — through knowledge (Line 1), through talents that mature in retreat (Line 2), and through your own experience (Line 3). The upper three are considered oriented toward others: Line 4 works through its network of relationships, Line 5 through the expectations others place in it, and Line 6 through its impact as a role model.
The two halves are connected. In its first decades, Line 6 lives like a Line 3 and gathers firsthand experience before gaining distance. And in a Profile, both directions often meet: in Profile 1/4, Line 4 passes on the knowledge Line 1 has built up within its own network; in Profile 3/5, the experience gathered becomes the basis for practical help for others.
Lines in gates and planets
It’s not only the Sun that has a Line. For each of the two moments, 13 celestial points are calculated, from the Sun and Earth through the Moon and the lunar nodes to Pluto — 26 activations in total, each of them in a gate and a Line. In the planet table of your free Human Design chart calculation, this appears as a number with a dot: 1.4 means Gate 1, Line 4.
Only the two Sun Lines count for your Profile; the other Lines refine the meaning of the individual gates. An exact birth time is worthwhile here: the Sun and the outer planets move slowly, but the Moon passes through a Line in less than two hours, and the Lines of the other points also change over the course of a day. The current transits show where the planets are today, gate and Line included.
Frequently asked questions about Lines
What are the Lines in Human Design?
The Lines are the six sections into which each of the 64 gates is divided — corresponding to the six lines of an I Ching hexagram. Which Line a planet activates depends on its exact position within the gate, and the Line refines the meaning of the gate. Each Line has a fixed role: Investigator, Hermit, Martyr, Opportunist, Heretic, and Role Model. For the Sun, the Lines make up your Profile.
How many Lines are there in Human Design?
There are six Lines, counted from Line 1 (bottom) to Line 6 (top). They repeat in each of the 64 gates, which gives 64 times 6, or 384 possible combinations of gate and Line. Each gate spans 5.625 degrees of the zodiac, and each Line just under one degree of that. The themes of the six Lines stay the same in every gate.
How are the Lines related to your Profile?
Your Profile consists of two Lines: the Line of your Personality Sun (conscious, black, moment of birth) and the Line of your Design Sun (unconscious, red, about 88 days before birth). If one is in Line 4 and the other in Line 6, you have Profile 4/6. The first number describes how you experience yourself, the second an imprint that others often see more clearly. This gives rise to twelve Profiles.
What does Line 3 mean in Human Design?
Line 3 is the Line of the Martyr. It learns by trial and error: starting, bumping into things, adjusting, trying again. A “this doesn’t work” is considered not a failure but a result. From the outside this path sometimes looks unsteady, but over the years it actually produces a wealth of practical experience. Consciously, Line 3 appears in Profiles 3/5 and 3/6; unconsciously, in 1/3 and 6/3.
What are the three life phases of Line 6?
Line 6 is the Role Model, and it is the only Line that lives in three phases. Until about 30, it lives like a Line 3 and gathers intense experiences. From about 30 to 50, it withdraws “onto the roof,” observes, and sorts through what it has experienced. From about 50 on, it comes down from the roof and has an impact as a serene role model — not by lecturing, but through the way it lives.
What does Gate 1.4 or “Gate 1, Line 4” mean?
The notation 1.4 means that a planet stands in Gate 1 and, within it, in Line 4 — that is, in the fourth of the six sections of this gate. The number before the dot names the theme of the gate, which for Gate 1 is creative self-expression; the number after it refines that theme with the character of the Line. If your Personality Sun is at 1.4, the first number of your Profile is a 4.
How do I find out my Lines?
You need your birth date, birth time, and birthplace. The free Human Design chart calculation then shows you a planet table for Personality and Design, listing the gate and Line next to each planet, such as 34.2. The Lines of your two Suns make up your Profile. If possible, take your birth time from your birth certificate, because the Moon’s Line changes after less than two hours.
The six Lines are a small detail in your chart with a big reach: they refine every gate and, with your two Suns, form your Profile. The easiest way to understand them is through your own example. Calculate your chart, look up in the planet table which Lines your Suns are in, and then read the articles on your two Lines.
