Gate 40 — Aloneness
Being there for others — and then closing the door behind you: for some people, the two belong inseparably together. Human Design describes this pattern with Gate 40.

What it is about
Gate 40 sits in the Heart/Ego Center, the center of willpower and self-worth. In the system it is considered the gate of aloneness: the willpower to work and provide for one's own community — paired with the equally legitimate need to withdraw afterward and recharge. The I Ching hexagram “Deliverance” carries this release in its name: once the work is done, the tension is allowed to dissolve. Giving and being on your own are not a contradiction here, but a rhythm.
When the gate is activated
With an activated Gate 40, you probably enjoy taking responsibility for the people who belong to you — you work, organize, provide. At the same time, you know the clear need to owe no one anything for a while: an evening alone, a weekend without appointments. Many people with this activation find that their effort flows most easily when it is seen and fairly answered — one-sidedness drains this gate especially. As a hanging gate, Gate 40 seeks its counterpart: people with Gate 37, the family spirit in the Solar Plexus, often feel especially attractive — together the two form Channel 37-40, in which caregiving and self-sufficiency complement each other. Attraction, not a lack.
In everyday life
An example: you organized the family gathering, cooked, held all the threads together. When the last guest leaves, you feel no emptiness but anticipation — for tomorrow, a day entirely for yourself, without a guilty conscience. That is exactly Gate 40: the aloneness afterward is not a retreat from people but the precondition for being there for them again. It helps to communicate this need openly instead of hiding it — whoever understands that your quiet phases are part of your care can appreciate both sides of you.
