The 36 Channels in Human Design – All Channels Explained
In Human Design, a channel is the connection between two centers. It consists of two gates, one at each end, and it is defined only when both gates are activated in your chart. The two centers it connects are then considered defined as well. Channels are thus the link between the 64 gates and the nine centers, and they determine a chart’s definition and type.
There are 36 channels in total. Each one bears a name that arises from the interplay of its two gates: Channel 1–8 is called “Inspiration,” Channel 6–59 “Intimacy,” Channel 21–45 “Material Leadership,” and Channel 25–51 “Initiation.” On this page you’ll find all 36 channels in one overview, an arrangement by the centers they connect, and a separate article for each channel.
The free Human Design chart calculation shows you which channels are defined in your chart and where only one gate of a channel is activated.

Each row leads to the full article: “Connects” lists the two centers, and “Gates” lists the two gates that together form the channel.
What a channel is and how it forms
In the bodygraph, pairs of gates face each other across a connecting line. That line is the channel. Channel 34–57, for example, connects Gate 34 in the Sacral Center with Gate 57 in the Spleen Center. Which gates are activated in your chart depends on the planetary positions at your birth and at a moment about three months earlier.
If both gates are activated, the channel is defined. It then works as a fixed connection, and both centers at its ends are considered defined. If only one of the two gates is active, it is called a hanging gate: the theme is there, but it is looking for its counterpart. A center can have several hanging gates and still remain open, as long as no complete channel connects it to another center.
Many channel articles also name the channel’s circuitry: individual, collective (logical or abstract), or tribal — that is, your own path, community on a large scale, or bonds within a close circle.
Channels, definition, and type
In Human Design, definition arises exclusively through complete channels. If all your defined centers are linked through channels, you have Single Definition. If they fall into two, three, or four separate groups, this is called Split, Triple Split, or Quadruple Split Definition. Between separate groups there is no fixed inner connection; the bridge comes through other people or through transits. If not a single channel is defined, there is no definition at all: that is the chart of the Reflector. Learn more under Definition: Single, Split, Triple, Quadruple.
Your type depends on the channels, too. Two questions are decisive: Is the Sacral Center defined? And does an unbroken connection run from a motor to the Throat? The motors are the Sacral, the Heart/Ego Center, the Solar Plexus, and the Root. Channel 20–34 connects the Sacral directly to the Throat, Channel 21–45 connects the Heart, and Channels 12–22 and 35–36 connect the Solar Plexus. The Root has no channel of its own to the Throat; its energy reaches the Throat only via other centers. A single channel can therefore decide whether someone is a Generator or a Manifesting Generator, a Projector or a Manifestor.
The 36 channels by center
Each channel connects exactly two of the nine centers. The most connected center is the Throat: 13 channels lead to it. The Head Center, by contrast, is connected only to the Ajna, and the Root only to the Sacral, the Spleen, and the Solar Plexus. This is how the channels are distributed across the pairs of centers:

Channels in relationships
Channels don’t form only within your own chart. If you bring one gate of a channel and the other person brings the other, together you form a complete channel that neither of you has alone. In Human Design this is called an electromagnetic connection.
With Channel 6–59, the connection of Gate 59 and Gate 6 is considered one of the strongest relationship connections of all; even so, emotional clarity takes time there. With Channel 21–45, it pays to agree on roles deliberately: Who decides what, and who owns what? Connections like these attract, and they challenge. Attraction and friction come from the same source, because the channel belongs to both people only together.
If a channel is open in your chart, you are not missing its theme. You experience it more variably and take it in from people who have it defined.
How to find your channels
For your bodygraph you need your birth date, birth time, and birthplace. The calculation then shows you, under “Your defined channels,” every channel that is complete in your chart. Without a birth time, the calculator uses 12:00 noon; individual channels may then differ.
There are also temporary channels. The planets move continuously through the 64 gates; wherever one of them stands, that gate is activated for everyone — for a few hours with the Moon, for a few days with the Sun, for years with Pluto. If such a transit hits the missing counterpart to a hanging gate in your chart, the channel is complete for that time. The Transits page shows which of your channels the sky is currently completing.
Frequently asked questions about channels
What is a channel in Human Design?
A channel is the connection between two of the nine centers in the bodygraph. It consists of two gates, one at each end. If both gates are activated in your chart, the channel is defined, and the two centers it connects are considered defined as well. Each channel has its own theme, which arises from the interplay of its two gates — Channel 6–59, “Intimacy,” for example.
How many channels are there in Human Design?
Human Design has 36 channels. They connect the 64 gates in pairs; four gates — 10, 20, 34, and 57 — each belong to three channels. The channels are unevenly distributed across the nine centers: 13 lead to the Throat, while the Head Center is connected to the Ajna by only three channels. A Reflector has not a single defined channel.
What is the difference between a gate and a channel?
A gate is a single point on a center; there are 64 of them, and each stands for a particular quality of energy or life theme. A channel connects two gates on two different centers. A single activated gate remains a hanging gate and does not yet define a center. Only when both gates of a channel are activated does a fixed connection form, and both centers become defined.
What does a defined channel mean?
A defined channel is a connection that exists permanently in your chart because both of its gates are activated. Its theme is part of your fixed make-up and works consistently, even when no one else is in the room. At the same time, it turns both connected centers into defined centers. Together, all your defined channels determine your definition and your type.
What is an electromagnetic connection in Human Design?
An electromagnetic connection forms when two people each bring one gate of the same channel: one person has Gate 59, for example, and the other has Gate 6. Together they form the whole channel, which neither has alone. In Human Design this is considered a source of strong attraction. Because the channel belongs to both people only together, it often brings friction as well; clear agreements help.
Can you get new channels in Human Design?
Your birth chart doesn’t change, so your defined channels stay the same. A channel can, however, be completed temporarily: when a transiting planet activates the missing counterpart to one of your hanging gates, or when another person brings that gate. The channel is then complete for that time or in that encounter. The Transits page shows which channels the current transits are completing.
How do I find my channels?
You need your birth date, birth time, and birthplace. The free Human Design chart calculation on akarion.de uses them to create your bodygraph and lists, under “Your defined channels,” every channel that is complete in your chart. If you don’t know your birth time, the calculator uses 12:00 noon; individual channels may then differ. You’ll find a separate article here for each of the 36 channels.
You learn the most about channels by looking them up in your own chart. Calculate your bodygraph with the free Human Design chart calculation, note your defined channels and your hanging gates, and then read the matching articles from the overview above. With the transits, you can also see which channels will be temporarily completed over the next few days.
