The 7 Authorities in Human Design: Decision-Making
How do you make a decision that still feels right weeks later? Human Design answers with inner authority: the part of your chart that has the final say in decisions. It doesn’t sit in your head but in one of your defined centers, and which center that is follows a fixed hierarchy. This yields 7 authorities, from emotional, sacral, and splenic authority all the way to the lunar authority of Reflectors.
The differences are clearly noticeable in everyday life: one authority needs a night or several days to think things over, another answers in the same instant, a third only after a full lunar cycle. Anyone who knows their own often understands in hindsight why some decisions held up and others didn’t.
On this page you’ll find all seven at a glance, the hierarchy of the centers, and answers to frequently asked questions. The free Human Design chart calculation shows you which authority is in your chart, together with your type and strategy.
The seven authorities at a glance
| Authority | Center | For which types | How you decide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Emotional Authority: Clarity Comes with the Wave | Solar Plexus | Generators, Manifesting Generators, Manifestors, Projectors | Sleep on it until the answer stays stable across the wave |
| Sacral Authority: Your Gut Responds Instantly | Sacral | Only Generators and Manifesting Generators | The first gut response to a yes/no question counts |
| Splenic Authority: The Quiet Voice That Speaks Only Once | Spleen | Manifestors, Projectors | Follow the first quiet impulse in the moment |
| Ego Authority: What Do You Really Want? | Heart/Ego Center | Manifestors, Projectors | Ask what you want and what you are willing to commit to |
| Self-Projected Authority: Your Voice Knows the Answer | G Center, connected to the Throat | Only Projectors | Say it out loud and listen to your own voice |
| Mental Orientation: Clarity in Conversation and in the Right Place | None defined below the Throat | Only Projectors | Talk it through with trusted people in the right places |
| Lunar Authority: The Moon as Your Decision Compass | None — all nine centers open | Only Reflectors | Wait out a full lunar cycle of about 28 days |
The order of the rows is also the hierarchy: the first authority whose condition your chart meets always applies.
What “inner authority” means
In Human Design, the mind is considered a good advisor but a poor decision-maker. It can research, compare, and carry out a decision wisely, yet it finds equally good counterarguments for every option. The deciding vote therefore goes to a defined center that works consistently and shows you, in its own way, what is right for you: as an emotional wave, a gut response, a quiet impulse, willpower, or the sound of your own voice.
Your authority complements the strategy of your type. Put simply, the strategy describes how you approach decisions — as a Generator by responding, as a Projector by waiting for the invitation, as a Manifestor by informing. Your authority tells you when and how you can recognize that a yes or a no will hold. Anyone who knows both wastes less energy on paths that are not their own.
The hierarchy: which center decides
Many charts have several defined centers, but there is always exactly one authority. A fixed hierarchy determines which one:
- Solar Plexus defined: emotional authority, no matter what else is defined.
- Solar Plexus open, Sacral defined: sacral authority.
- Sacral also open, Spleen defined: splenic authority.
- Spleen also open, Heart/Ego Center defined: ego authority.
- Heart also open, G Center connected to the Throat: self-projected authority.
- Nothing defined below the Throat, only the Head, Ajna, or Throat: mental orientation.
- All nine centers open: lunar authority.
The Head Center and the Ajna don’t appear in this list: they never tip the scales, even when they are defined. Because your type also follows from your defined centers, type and authority are linked. Only Generators and Manifesting Generators have a defined Sacral, which is why sacral authority exists only for them. Projectors, on the other hand, can have five different authorities. The Centers section explains what defined and open mean.
The seven authorities in brief
- Emotional authority: the most common one. Your feelings move in a wave, which is why there is no truth in the now for you. Clarity ripens when a question holds up through several moods.
- Sacral authority: Your gut responds instantly, before any justification. You don’t need time to think it over — you need a good question you can respond to.
- Splenic authority: a quiet intuition in the moment that doesn’t repeat itself. Whatever keeps talking after the first impulse is usually already the mind.
- Ego authority: Your will is the compass. The guiding question is what you truly want and what you are willing to commit to.
- Self-projected authority: Your truth reveals itself as you speak. When you think out loud, you can hear in the sound of your voice whether something fits you.
- Mental orientation: also called environmental authority; it is considered the only configuration without an inner authority. Clarity emerges in conversation with people you trust and in places where you feel at ease.
- Lunar authority: The Moon sets the pace. Big decisions get a full cycle of about 28 days.

Common mistakes in everyday life
Every authority has its own stumbling blocks, but some patterns come up again and again:
- The head overrules the body. Your gut says no, but your mind finds the idea sensible and wins out.
- Pressure from outside. “I need an answer now” hits emotional and lunar authority hardest. Asking for time to think is not hesitation here but part of the process.
- Waiting for a louder signal. The Spleen speaks only once, and the Sacral responds the moment the question is asked. If you wait, what you hear afterward is usually already your head.
- Advice instead of resonance. With self-projected authority, mental orientation, and lunar authority, conversations are a sounding board, not an oracle. Anyone who simply does what others advise is borrowing their clarity.
- Obligation instead of energy. A yes born of “should” feels different from a yes born of energy or will.
How to find your authority
Your authority is neither chosen nor determined by a test; it follows mechanically from your chart. All it takes is your birth date, birth time, and birthplace. The free Human Design chart calculation shows you your type, strategy, and authority, plus which centers are defined in your bodygraph. Then try out your authority on small questions first, and observe over a few weeks how your decisions feel.
Frequently asked questions about authority
What is inner authority in Human Design?
Inner authority is the part of your Human Design chart that has the final say in decisions. It doesn’t sit in your head but in a defined center, such as the Solar Plexus, the Sacral, or the Spleen. Which center decides follows a fixed hierarchy. The mind remains important: it researches, compares, and plans how to carry things out, but it doesn’t cast the deciding vote.
What are the different authorities in Human Design?
Human Design distinguishes seven authorities: emotional authority (Solar Plexus), sacral authority (Sacral), splenic authority, ego authority (Heart/Ego Center), self-projected authority (G Center connected to the Throat), mental orientation, also called environmental authority, and the lunar authority of Reflectors. This order is also the hierarchy: what counts is the first one whose condition your chart meets.
How do I find out my Human Design authority?
Your authority comes from your chart — that is, from your birth date, birth time, and birthplace. A free Human Design chart calculation shows it to you together with your type and strategy, and makes visible which centers are defined. A test or questionnaire won’t help here, because your authority follows mechanically from your defined centers. After that, it’s worth trying it out on small everyday questions first.
What does emotional authority mean?
You have emotional authority if your Solar Plexus is defined. It is the most common authority and takes precedence over all others. Your feelings move in a wave, so the same question can feel exciting one day and tedious the next. That is why the rule is: no truth in the now. Clarity comes when you carry a decision through several emotional states — overnight for small questions, over several days for big ones.
What is the difference between sacral and splenic authority?
Both respond in the moment, but in different ways. Sacral authority is a physical gut response to a concrete question — a palpable lighting up or slumping. It exists only in Generators and Manifesting Generators. Splenic authority is a quiet intuition that speaks only once and doesn’t repeat itself. It occurs in Projectors and Manifestors when the Solar Plexus and the Sacral are open.
Why isn’t the mind an authority in Human Design?
The mind can find just as many good counterarguments for every option as it finds arguments. That is why Human Design considers it a good advisor but a poor decision-maker: it may research, sort things out, and plan how to carry them out, but inner authority casts the deciding vote. The Head and Ajna Centers therefore never establish an authority, even when they are defined. Even with mental orientation, clarity emerges through exchange with others, not through brooding.
Can your Human Design authority change?
No. Your authority follows from the defined centers in your chart, and your chart is based on your birth data. It shows exactly one authority, which stays the same your whole life. What can change is how you work with it: anyone who deliberately makes small everyday decisions through their own authority and observes the results will recognize its signals more clearly over time, even with big questions.
No authority is better than another: sacral authority responds instantly, lunar authority takes a month, and both are right for the person in question.
