Human Design Relationships: the Composite Chart

As soon as two people are together, two charts meet, and from both a third picture arises: the couple chart. It shows where you complete each other, where one shapes the other, where you bring the same thing and where you are both open. This section explains Human Design for two — for couples in love first, but just as much for parents and children, siblings, friends and colleagues.

Human Design doesn't hand out grades in the process. There are no good or bad combinations and no score for how compatible two people are. What the system offers is a map of how you work together: four types of connection per channel, the number of centers you define together, the pairing of your types and authorities. Whether a relationship is right for you is something you decide with your own inner authority.

Here you'll find all 24 articles on relationships at a glance, the basic concepts in brief and answers to the most common questions. Your shared chart is shown by the free Human Design chart calculation for two; the article Human Design in Relationships offers an introduction to the topic.

The type-pairing articles are written symmetrically: it makes no difference which of you has which type, and no combination is better than another.

What is a couple chart?

A couple chart lays two Human Design charts on top of each other. Every person brings 26 activations, conscious ones (Personality, black) and unconscious ones (Design, red), distributed across the 64 gates. In the couple chart, the gates of both people count together. This creates channels that are only defined together, and sometimes centers that neither of you has defined alone.

The couple chart is not a third being with a type of its own but a picture of what flows between you as long as you are together. Each of you remains who you are. It's best read in a fixed order; the guide Reading a couple chart takes you through it in six steps. How a single chart is structured is explained in Reading the Bodygraph.

Four types of connection

For each of the 36 channels, the couple chart checks who brings which gate. This results in four types of connection, each with its own dynamic and its own practice:

  • Electromagnetic: You have one gate, the other person has the other. The channel only arises together, with attraction and friction from the same source.
  • Compromise: One of you has the whole channel, the other one gate. The single gate is outvoted by the whole channel.
  • Dominance: One of you has the whole channel, the other neither gate. One shapes the theme, the other experiences it along with them.
  • Companionship: You both have the whole channel. Familiarity and a shared language, but also the risk of one-sidedness.

With compromise and dominance, the direction matters: who has the whole channel? Nobody is to blame for it. The types of connection describe how two make-ups work together, not how anyone ought to behave.

Centers and closeness

A second look goes to the nine centers. Count how many are defined in the couple chart, in one of you or only through a shared channel. Many shared defined centers, seven to nine, stand for great closeness and little leeway: you are closely interwoven, and recovery needs time alone. Few, zero to three, leave a lot of air, a lot of freedom and less pull. Neither is better; it's a question of how much closeness you both need.

For each center there are three states: defined in both (the same constant, but two fixed rhythms), defined in one and open in the other (one sends, the other takes it in and amplifies it) or open in both. The centers you both have open are your shared field of learning: there, neither of you gives the other something to hold on to, and you both know what influence from outside feels like. In detail in Centers in relationships; you'll find the basics of the individual centers in the overview of the nine centers.

Who completes whom

A hanging gate is a gate whose matching gate is missing from your own chart. If the other person brings exactly this matching gate, the channel arises electromagnetically, and near them you experience something your chart doesn't have on its own. Sometimes this shifts the mechanics: together with the other person, your couple chart can, for example, carry Generator energy even though you are a Projector, or emotional clarity even though you have a different authority. You remain who you are, but together you can do things neither of you can do alone.

Every completing gate comes from a specific planet of the other person, activated consciously or unconsciously. That colors the channel: if it comes from the Sun, it is a core theme of the person; from the Moon, a drive that comes and goes; from Saturn, more structure and commitment. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto stay in the same gate for years and color whole generations. In a Reflector, every gate is hanging, because a Reflector has no channels: if the other person closes one of them, the couple chart carries definition for the Reflector for the first time, and whole channels of the other person to which the Reflector brings no gate are experienced as dominance. The Reflector remains a Reflector; time alone and the lunar cycle remain their measure.

Type pairings: fifteen combinations

The five types make fifteen possible pairs, counting same-type pairs. Each pair has its own dynamic of strategy meeting strategy: Generators and Manifesting Generators need questions they can respond to; Manifestors inform and don't want to have to ask first; Projectors need invitation and recognition; Reflectors need time, a good place and room to mirror. Where these strategies mesh, everyday life becomes easy. Where they rub, a few simple rules for communication help.

Same-type pairs aren't a boring repetition but a mirror: you recognize yourself in the other person, in the good and in the tiring. You'll find the basics of the five types in the overview of the five types; then there's the pace of your authorities, described in Deciding as a pair.

Frequently asked questions about Human Design and relationships

Which Human Design types are compatible?

In Human Design there are no types that belong together better or worse. Each of the fifteen combinations has its own logic: two Generators share the joy of doing things together, a Generator and a Projector combine energy and overview, a Manifestor brings impulses that others can pick up, a Reflector brings a clear mirror. A relationship becomes easy where both are allowed to live their own strategy. The types of connection of the channels and the shared defined centers often tell you more than the types do.

Is there a Human Design compatibility test?

A test that rates your relationship with a grade or a score doesn't exist in Human Design, and there's a technical reason for that: the system describes mechanics, not a forecast. What does exist is a map. The couple chart shows which channels you share electromagnetically, as a compromise, in dominance or in companionship, how many centers are defined together and who completes whom. The free partner calculator, the free Human Design chart calculation for two, lays your two charts on top of each other for this.

What is an electromagnetic connection?

An electromagnetic connection arises when you have activated one gate of a channel and the other person the other, but neither of you has the whole channel alone. In the couple chart, the channel is then defined as long as you are together. Many people experience this as a strong attraction, as a feeling that together you can do something neither can do alone. But friction comes from the same source, because each of you steers only your own half. It isn't proof that you are soul mates; you can have connections like this with many people.

What do compromise and dominance channels mean?

In a compromise channel, one of you has the whole channel and the other only one of the two gates. The single gate is outvoted by the whole channel, and whoever carries it often finds that their contribution in this theme doesn't really count. In a dominance channel, one has the whole channel and the other neither gate: one shapes the theme, the other experiences it along with them, amplifies it and easily takes it for their own. In both cases the direction matters, in both cases nobody is to blame, and for both sides there is a simple practice.

What does the number of shared defined centers say?

It shows how closely you are interwoven energetically, and no number is better than another. Many shared defined centers, around seven to nine, mean great closeness and little leeway; people connected this way usually need time alone to recover. Few, zero to three, leave a lot of freedom and air, but less pull. What matters is how much closeness you both need. The centers you both have open are your field of learning: there, neither of you gives the other something to hold on to, and that is exactly what connects you, because you both know it.

What do I need for a couple chart?

For both people, you need the date, time and place of birth. The birth time matters because some activations change within a few hours, above all those of the Moon, which moves through two to three gates in a single day. If the time is missing for one of you, the couple chart can still be calculated; you then read the affected channels with caution. Because the other person often isn't there when you look at their chart, it's worth handling what you discover with care.

Does this also apply to parent and child, or to friendships?

Yes. A couple chart works for any two-person relationship: parent and child, siblings, friends, colleagues. The mechanics are the same; only the themes shift. Between parent and child, it's especially worth looking at dominance channels and the child's open centers, because that's where the child takes in the parents' energy. At work, electromagnetic channels often show where two people achieve more together than separately. For families, there is a separate article on parent and child in Human Design.

Can Human Design tell whether a relationship will last?

No. Human Design is a system of experience and self-reflection, not an established science, and it doesn't decide about relationships. The two people do that, each with their own authority. A couple chart says nothing about whether you love each other or how long you'll stay together. It helps you understand how you work together: where you strengthen each other, where you rub against each other and what each of you needs. Many people already find that a relief, because reproach can turn into understanding.

A couple chart tells you the most when you look at it with the person in your own life.
