The Nine Centers
Why can you count on some parts of yourself like clockwork, while others seem to change completely depending on who you're with? In Human Design, the answer lies in the nine centers of your chart. They show where your energy works consistently — and where, like a finely tuned sensor, you take in and amplify the energy of the people around you.
From seven chakras to nine centers
The centers are an evolution of the Indian chakra teachings. In Human Design, the seven classical energy centers became nine: the idea behind this is that the system describes the human being of a new era, with a more finely differentiated energetic anatomy. Each center stands for an area of life — thinking, communication, identity, emotions, instinct, and more.
The crucial distinction is between defined and open. A defined center (colored in the chart) works consistently and reliably — this is where you shape your environment. An open center (white) has no fixed energy of its own: it takes in what's happening around you, amplifies it, and learns from it. Important: open does not mean broken or weak. Open centers are your most receptive places — over time, they're where you can develop deep wisdom about other people, precisely because you're not locked into one way of being.
The three awareness centers
Head Center: This is the seat of the pressure of inspiration — questions, doubts, wonder at the world. Defined, you ask your own questions and inspire others with them. Open, you absorb the questions of your surroundings and, over time, grow wise about which questions are truly worth pursuing — and which are just borrowed mental pressure.
Ajna Center: The center of concepts and thinking. It processes questions into opinions, theories, and certainties. Defined, you think in a characteristic, consistent way. Open, you can follow many different ways of thinking, stay mentally flexible, and never have to be pinned down to a single truth — a flexibility many people only learn to appreciate over time.
Throat Center: The throat is the outlet: everything working inside you wants to become expression and action here — speaking, doing, manifesting. Defined, you have a reliable way of communicating. Open, your voice varies with your environment; you sense clearly when speaking lands and when silence is wiser, and you can give voice to many different things.
Identity, will, instinct
G Center: This is about identity, direction, and love — the sense of who you are and where your life is headed. Defined, you carry a stable sense of self within you. Open, you experience identity as more fluid: you can feel your way into many roles and people, and you learn that the right places and people give you direction — not a rigid self-image.
Heart or Ego Center: The center of willpower, self-worth, and promises. Defined, you can reliably commit to something and see it through — rest periods included. Open, you don't have to prove anything to anyone: your worth doesn't depend on achievement. The one who truly internalizes this becomes wise at recognizing who can keep their promises.
Spleen Center: The seat of intuition, instinct, and well-being in the moment. It speaks quietly and in the now: a spontaneous sense of what's good for you. Defined, you have a reliable inner radar. Open, you pick up very subtly on how others are doing and, over time, develop a shrewd sense of which fears are real and which you've merely picked up along the way.
Energy and pressure
Sacral Center: The engine of life force and work energy. Defined (in Generators and Manifesting Generators), you have access to renewable energy when you respond to what genuinely lights you up. Open, your energy isn't constant — you can have powerful phases, but you need deliberate breaks and know better than anyone when enough is enough.
Solar Plexus Center: The emotional center. Defined, your feelings move in a wave from high to low — not a malfunction, but your natural rhythm, one that grants depth and clarity over time. Open, you often feel other people's emotions more strongly than they do. Learning to distinguish what's yours makes you a sensitive, empathetic observer of emotional life.
Root Center: This is the seat of the pressure that drives us: stress in the neutral sense, the fuel for getting things done. Defined, you handle this pressure at your own pace. Open, you amplify the pressure of your surroundings — the art is getting things done without letting someone else's "hurry, hurry!" rush you. Master that, and you stay calm where others spin.
Your personal blueprint
Which of your centers are defined and which are open follows from your birth data — and this mix is the foundation for your type, your strategy, and your authority. No configuration is better than another: defined centers are your reliable substance, open centers your learning fields and potential sources of wisdom.
