How Your Chart Is Calculated

A Human Design chart looks like magic: you enter three details, and seconds later a detailed picture of your energy appears. In reality there is no magic behind it, but precise astronomy — the same celestial mechanics observatories calculate with, translated into the symbolic language of Human Design. Here you'll learn what really happens in the calculation.

Three details are enough

For your chart, all you need is your birth date, your birth time, and your birth place. The place matters because it determines the time zone: your local birth time is first converted to universal time — including historical daylight-saving rules, which varied by country and year. Only with this exact universal-time moment can it be calculated where the Sun, Moon, and planets stood in the sky. Nothing beyond these three details is needed — no name, no further personal data.

Two calculations: Personality and Design

The distinctive feature of Human Design: your chart is built not from one but from two moments in time.

• Personality (black): the planetary positions at the moment of your birth. In the system, these activations count as your conscious part — what you know about yourself.
• Design (red): the planetary positions at the moment when the Sun stood 88 degrees of arc before its position at your birth. This is an exactly astronomically determined moment, roughly three months before birth. These activations count as your unconscious part.

Important: the Design moment is not simply “counted back three months” but calculated from the Sun's position. Because the Earth does not move at a uniform speed along its orbit, the interval varies slightly — the 88 degrees of arc are the fixed measure.

13 points per calculation — 26 activations

For each of the two moments, 13 celestial points are determined: the Sun, the Earth (exactly opposite the Sun), the Moon, the ascending and descending lunar nodes (the intersections of the Moon's orbit with the ecliptic), plus Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. Two times 13 yields the 26 activations from which your entire bodygraph is built. Incidentally, the Sun and Earth count as the weightiest points in the system — your Profile, for example, comes from the Sun lines of both calculations.

From the sky into the wheel of 64 gates

So how does a planetary position become a gate? The ecliptic — the Sun's apparent yearly path across the sky, a circle of 360 degrees — is divided in Human Design into 64 equal segments corresponding to the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching: the so-called wheel. Each gate thus spans 5.625 degrees. Each gate is further divided into 6 lines (just under one degree each), and the lines can be resolved even more finely — but for the basics, gate and line are enough.

If a planet stands in a particular segment of the wheel at one of the two moments, it activates the corresponding gate in your chart — black for the Personality calculation, red for the Design calculation. If in the end both gates of a channel are activated, definition arises: centers become colored in, and from that follow your type and your authority. Assigning celestial positions to the gates is pure arithmetic; their meaning is the system's layer of interpretation.

Why the birth time should be exact

The Sun and the outer planets move at a leisurely pace — with them, an hour more or less usually changes nothing. The Moon is different: it travels through an entire gate in about ten hours and passes through a single line in less than two hours. The lines of the remaining points also change repeatedly over the course of a day. An imprecise birth time can therefore shift individual activations — and in borderline cases even flip a gate that decides a channel, a center, or your authority.

Our recommendation: take your birth time from your birth certificate or request it from the registry office of your birthplace — relatives' memories (“sometime in the morning”) are often off by hours. If you only know your time approximately, that is no reason to despair: the broad strokes of your chart usually remain stable. When in doubt, calculate two variants and see whether anything essential differs.
