Line 6 — The Role Model
You have the sense that your life runs in chapters that differ markedly from one another: a stormy beginning, then a time of withdrawal and observation — and at some point a clarity out of which others come to you for orientation. This is exactly how Human Design describes Line 6: the line of the Role Model.
The core of this line
Line 6 is the topmost line of the hexagram — it looks out over the edge. Its life theme is maturity: not as a state, but as a path. Unlike all the other lines, it lives in three phases of life:
- Until about 30: Line 6 lives like a Line 3 — it experiments, gets knocked about, gathers intense experience with everything life has to offer.
- About 30 to 50: The retreat “onto the roof”: it pulls back a bit from the fray, observes, sorts through what it has lived, and develops a standpoint of its own.
- From about 50: It climbs down from the roof and acts as a relaxed role model — not by lecturing, but through the way it lives.
Whoever knows this dramaturgy often understands their life anew in hindsight: the wild years were not a detour but the raw material of later wisdom.
As the conscious line
If your Personality Sun sits in Line 6 — the first number of your Profile — you experience the three phases consciously and distinctly. Early on you feel a pull toward overview and meaning, you measure yourself against your own ideals, and at some point you notice that people treat you as an authority: they ask you how you see it. Your task is patience with the process — you don’t become a role model through effort, but through lived time.
As the unconscious line
If Line 6 sits in your Design — red, the second number — the path of maturing runs in the background. You may notice the phase changes only as diffuse upheavals, while others have long since seen that with the years you are becoming calmer, clearer, and more credible. You often become a role model without intending to: people orient themselves by you because your bearing radiates reliability — an effect the people around you recognize earlier than you do. Allow yourself to take the phases seriously, including the retreat when it announces itself: it is part of the path.
Which Profiles it appears in
Line 6 shapes four Profiles: consciously in Profile 6/2 and in Profile 6/3, unconsciously in Profile 3/6 and in Profile 4/6. Depending on the partner line, the role model matures out of hidden talents, out of lifelong experimentation, or on the ground of relationships that hold.
